In his essay "sift the ashes," the writer Jonathan Franzen has the following about the smoking habit he struggles to quit: "[w] hen you are a smoker, you are strongly present to you: you leave the rush to pass the unconscious life. "
Fair words, whose cigar smokers many would agree. This is probably why so many of history's most famous and most beloved writers are difficult to mentally picture without a cigar: Mark Twain, Ernest Hemingway, Gertrude Stein, Collette, George Sand, Karl Marx. Not terrible company, and they are not alone. Some major contemporary authors are cigar smokers as well.
Paul Auster
Born in Newark, New Jersey, Paul Auster graduated from Columbia, then moved to Paris in France to earn a living as a translator French-literature. He was married to two highly regarded writers American "Siri Hustvedt (now) and, before that, Lydia Davis, who is also known for his translation work – and his novels, The New York Trilogy and Moon Palace are modern classics. It is known to use the shape of the detective novel to entertain larger questions about the meaning of identity, language and existence. But his greatest fame – and its importance for smokers – came when he wrote and co-directed the movie Smoke, a landmark of American indie cinema in a Brooklyn cigar shop.
Centered on Auggie Wren, owner of the Brooklyn Cigar Company – a kind of existential Dew Drop Inn where large sections of humanity together – he wondered about the random yet seemingly meaningful connections between different people, a theme major writing Auster (and several other major films about American art in the same period – Consider Short Cuts and Magnolia). Auster selection of a smoke shop as his setting renders the film, which is based on one of his own short stories, especially meaningful for cigars diehard smokers.
Edward Whittemore
Here is an artist with a colorful life indeed – he went from Yale to the Marines to the CIA, wrote for the Japan Times (he was part of its coverage), lived in Crete, and wrote the massive, tripped in the collection of spy novels literature known as the Jerusalem Quartet, a work praised by Tom Robbins – as a bowl of hashish pudding – and by Jonathan Carroll as a book
"Fact grow your soul. "(To give you an idea: one of the books is about a 12-year-long poker game in which the winner is the owner of the Earth Ste. It's just the plot of one of them.) However, the Quartet was exhausted after only a few years, and Whittemore ended his days in abject poverty and obscurity, working as a photocopier for a law firm.
In 2003, eight years after his death, the quartet has been reissued at all-but-universal Acclaim, Jim Hougan, writing in Harper's, called it "one of the last, the best arguments against television "and Whittemore – a writer of extraordinary talent. His friend Thomas C. Wallace remembers his love of cigars: "We walked in woods and fields of southern Vermont a day sitting in front of the house after dinner on solid green Adirondack chairs, glass in hand and smoking cigars. "In Somewhat similarly, cigar aficionados should search for his one-of-a-kind novels – after all, smokers of premium cigars already know that most delights immediately accessible are not always the deepest.
John Grisham
You probably know that John Grisham is a former lawyer and greatest novelist successes of the 1990s, but you probably do not know about his charity work, his advocacy of those unjustly imprisoned, his unwavering support less commercially successful authors – or the fact that it was said he smokes four cigars a week. In addition to writing the beloved thrillers legal firm and a time to Kill, among others (and that starts like a house painted), he was a missionary and relief in Brazil and service on the board of directors of the Innocence Project, which uses DNA testing to exonerate the wrongfully convicted. Perhaps all this so it ended up on a list of Cigar Aficionado in the first hundred smokers.
