Phnom Penh is one such pleasant concoction. Exotic to the core and ever-growing, the city is well-known for its profusion of monks, resplendent palaces and the Mekong river beds. But to experience Phnom Penh is to stroll down one of its local markets where culture, personality and the best bargains are found in abundance. The Russian Markets in Phnom Penh are popular with locals and tourists alike for this very reason. Situated along the southern quarter of the city this bustling market place derives its name from the many Russian expats who made their home in the locale, in the 80’s.
Visitor will be bombarded with such a variety of goods that range from home ware, furnishings, gems, jewels, books, traditional handicrafts, shoes, clothes, music, handmade silks and even backpacks. A bargain hunter’s dream come true, the Russian Markets also offer branded goods from nearby garment factories at affordable rates.
A veritable treasure trove for art lovers, authentic antique carvings and newly made traditional figurines share the shelve space at the markets. Providing a much needed platform for local artisans to display their wares, you will find delicate carvings brought all the way from Rottana Kiri and Mondol Kiri as well. The stalls along the Russian Markets are especially stock full of local art during the ‘Water Festival’ which takes place annually in November. Other objects d’art on sale include silverware, stone carvings and old Indochinese currency in the form of coins and notes while ritualistic objects and custom made jewellery are also available.
Hand-woven silks can also be bought at reasonable rates while the other top sellers in the market include the scrumptious food and refreshments that are also abundantly available throughout the market place. Renowned for their mouth-watering culinary delights guests will be amiss if they did not try the local delicacies on hand.

Thirteen Days [VHS] $1.74 When released in December 2000, Thirteen Days was pummeled for taking liberties with the facts of the Cuban missile crisis and smothering its compelling drama with phony Boston accents by its primary stars. More tolerant critics hailed it as one of the year’s best films, and that’s the opinion to believe for anyone who enjoys taut, intelligent political thrillers. For those too young to relate dir… |

Patton (1970 Film): Also Featuring Tora! Tora! Tora! (1970 Film) (1997 Studio Recording) $12.57 The collaboration between director Franklin J. Schaffner and composer Jerry Goldsmith produced several fantastic films and scores, but none have been more memorable than 1970’s Patton. Goldsmith’s grandiosely constructed marches and echoing trumpets express both the essence of the complex general as well as Schaffner’s visual imagery. These trumpets find their way into nearly every part of the fil… |

Enemy At The Gates (2001 Film) $5.97 For many an armchair history buff, the Allied invasion of Europe on D day in 1944 is seen as the decisive European battle of World War II. In reality, the war’s turning point may well have been the German army’s defeat at Stalingrad in the bitterly cold early months of 1943 after one of history’s bloodiest sieges. Director Sergio Leone had planned an epic film version of those events, but he died … |

K-19 the Widowmaker (Score) $18.98 Given the film’s fevered, rooted-in-cold-war-history nuclear tensions and claustrophobic, intensely Russian settings, promising newcomer/Hans Zimmer protégé Klaus Badelt (The Time Machine and contributions to Gladiator and Pearl Harbor) was saddled with more than a few expectations in scoring director Kathryn Bigelow’s Soviet sub thriller. But Badelt has admirably risen to the occasion, conjurin… |
