| Zonya
Brewton, the ninth of ten children, was born to a loving Mother
who was an exemplary role model and nurtured healthy self-esteem
among all her children.
Feeling extremely fortunate for the role models
in her life, she quickly realized that every young girl had not
been as fortunate. During her college years, she witnessed
the pain and anger that some of her peers experienced due to negative
influences in their childhood.
After obtaining her B.S. in Business Management
from the University of South Carolina, Zonya moved to Atlanta, Georgia,
to start her career.
Blessed to secure a job with a Fortune 500 company
and complete her MBA at Mercer University in Atlanta, Georgia, she
knew it was now time for her to reach out to her community.
In her early twenties, she accepted her responsibility
as a role model to younger girls, when she joined the Big Brother
Big Sister Program. This is where she felt she had the opportunity
to truly encourage and foster healthy self esteem in someone not
fortunate enough to experience this in their home environment.
As a mentor Zonya clearly understood the phrase
"it takes a village to raise a child." She watched
the impact of several females that came into the life of the young
lady she was matched with. This is when she realized that it is
not one influence that shapes a young girl's life, but many.
In 1996 she was blessed with her own daughter,
Morgan Taylor Brewton-Johnson. The desire to foster healthy self-esteem
among girls was now transferred to her own daughter. She now had
the primary responsibility for an impressionable life. When her
daughter was a toddler she’d start to dispense to her life's
lessons.
Zonya started writing her poetry in the early
1990s. She wrote one of her initial poems to a friend who
was undergoing a challenging time in her life. She continued to
write to heal the broken hearted and to celebrate joyous events
in people's lives. She even used writing as a vehicle to help her
through a challenging time in her own life. Writing was definitely
a place where Zonya found peace. It was a God-given gift.
"Poems to Our Daughters" was born out
of Zonya's love for writing and her desire to encourage her daughter
to be all that she can be and to influence women across the world
to help foster healthy self-esteem among young girls. Most importantly
this book shares lessons learned and taught.
